Abstract

Contact dermatitis lesions are a frequent cause of consultation in the daily practice of allergists, particularly those induced by substances present in cosmetic products. Accurate diagnosis of these eczematous conditions requires patch testing using updated series with clinical relevance. In Brazil, the currently available cosmetic patch test series is outdated, originating from the period in which the Brazilian standard series was established. Recently, a new cosmetic series comprising 20 elements has been proposed, following the specific numbering of each hapten. Based on this proposal, a literature search was conducted in PubMed and ClinicalKey databases, focusing on publications from the past 10 years that addressed allergens in the context of contact dermatitis. Within this scenario, the present review aimed to discuss the selected allergens involved in cosmetic-related contact dermatitis, highlight their current scientific relevance, and reaffirm the need for the development of a new, specific cosmetic patch test series.
